Obtaining a CCW (carry concealed weapons) permit in Northern CA is much easier than many bay area and Southern CA counties. It is each Sheriff's policy which dictates whether you are able to receive a CCW, or not. The state of CA requires that each applicant shall have good cause. Many Sheriff's in CA have determined that "good cause" shall be personal protection or self defense. This is the case with Sierra County Sheriff Tim Standley.

You must schedule an appointment directly with the Sierra County Sheriff Department, CCW division. You shall demonstrate good moral character, prove that you are an outstanding resident of Sierra County, and be prepared to undergo a thorough and complete background check.

Upon approval of your Sierra County CCW application, you will be required to complete at least an 8 hour CCW training, including demonstrating the ability to safely (and proficiently) handle and use the handguns (up to 3) to be on your permit, and you must "qualify" with each weapon to be on your permit, by specific serial number. Regardless of the number of days, or how long the training is, or how far away the training center is, it is very crucial to know the laws of the state of CA, and particularly knowing the laws when it comes down to self defense, and where you are not allowed to carry weapons, etc., rather than just demonstrating that you can shoot a gun at a range.
